Unclogging a Stubborn Drain

Clear slow or blocked drains without calling a plumber. Learn multiple methods from simple to advanced for any type of clog.

Unclogging a Stubborn Drain

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Try Boiling Water First

Boil a full kettle of water and pour it slowly down the drain in two or three stages, allowing it to work for several seconds between each pour. This dissolves soap and grease buildup.

2

The Baking Soda Method

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain and wait 30 minutes. Flush with hot water.

3

Use a Plunger

Fill the sink with a few inches of water. Place the plunger over the drain, ensuring a good seal. Pump vigorously 15-20 times, then pull up sharply.

4

Deploy the Drain Snake

If the clog persists, insert a drain snake into the drain opening. Feed it in while turning the handle clockwise. When you feel resistance, you've hit the clog. Continue turning to break it up.

5

Clean the P-Trap

Place a bucket under the P-trap (the curved pipe under the sink). Unscrew the slip nuts and remove the trap. Clean out any debris, rinse, and reassemble.

Water will spill when you remove the P-trap. Have towels ready.

Pro Tips

  • Avoid chemical drain cleaners — they damage pipes over time
  • Use a drain cover to prevent future clogs
  • Run hot water after each use to prevent buildup
